With Christmas only days away, millions of New Yorkers are packing up the car and preparing to travel to spend the holidays with family and friends. As one of the busiest long-distance travel times of the year, New York highways are going to be packed between now and January, and with more people on the road comes more opportunities for accidents. If you are one of the more than 100 million Americans AAA anticipates will be hitting the road this Christmas, keep in mind these safety tips on how to avoid some of the most common causes of holiday car accidents.
- Don’t drink and drive. Drunk driving arrests tend to skyrocket around the holidays. If you plan on attending holiday parties where alcohol is being served, avoid driving!
- Minimize distractions. Distracted driving causes several thousand accidents in the United States every year, many of which are the result of cell phone usage and texting. Grooming, eating, or reading maps while driving are other common sources of distraction. Put away any distracting items while you are driving so your focus is less likely to wander.
- Be patient. It can be tempting to drive faster or more aggressively that you normally would after being stuck in traffic for longer than you anticipated. Remember, though, that it is not worth risking you family’s safety to drive impatiently. The last thing you want is for your holiday to be ruined by a car accident.
- Get a good night’s sleep. The night before your car trip, make sure you get at least eight hours or more of sleep. Those who receive only six or seven hours of sleep double their risk of an accident, while those who receive even less may be up to five times more likely to be involved in a collision.
By being aware of these accident causes, you can be proactive about ensuring your family’s safety. We at Koenigsberg & Associates Law Offices wish you and your family a safe and wonderful holiday!
