New York Roadways Get More Dangerous During Dusk and Dark Hours
New York officials predicted that the end of daylight saving time would create more hazardous evening commute as individuals find it more difficult to see while driving. In fact, an analysis by the New York Department of Transportation states that between 2010 and 2014, earlier darkness and sunsets have been linked to the increase in the amount of pedestrians seriously injured or killed in vehicle accidents.
Recently, in Lower Manhattan, a woman, age 58, suffered fatal injuries after being struck by a Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus. According to law enforcement officers, the driver was arrested and charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian.
As a result, Bill de Blasio, the administration of Mayor, announced that new $1.5 million “dusk and darkness” safety campaign will include signs on buses, billboards designed to warn motorists and pedestrians to be more careful, radio advertisements, and television advertisements, especially during dusk and darker parts of the day. Additionally, law enforcement officers will focus on stopping people who are speeding, failing to yield to pedestrians, texting, or blocking bicycle lanes during these times of day.
This campaign comes as part of the Vision Zero plan, which has designed a set of proposals to eliminate injuries and fatalities caused by vehicle accidents. As of October 24, 2016, there has been 192 traffic accident fatalities, 114 of which involved pedestrians. The remainder involved cars, motorcyclists, and bicyclists.
In a statement regarding the campaign, Mr. de Blasio explained, “Our key Vision Zero agencies have teamed up to not only study crash data, but to work closely together and make critical adjustments that we believe will literally save lives.”
