According to NYC Open Data, there were 131 pedestrian fatalities in 2019 in New York City. Based on known 2019 data, this total made New York City the leading contributor to pedestrian fatalities nationwide.

Another fact, 244 people were killed in auto accident collisions in New York City in 2019. Therefore, pedestrian fatalities accounted for 54% of all New York auto accident fatalities. The second-largest factor of auto accident fatalities was distracted driving, accounting for 38 deaths.

Although pedestrian fatalities increased from 2018 to 2019, 2019 was the third-lowest year for pedestrian fatalities when looking at the past five years.

Pedestrian fatalities across the last five years:

  1. 2016: 148 fatalities;
  2. 2015: 133 fatalities;
  3. 2019: 131 fatalities;
  4. 2017: 127 fatalities;
  5. 2018: 121 fatalities.

2019 Pedestrian Accident Data

According to NYC Open Data, auto accidents resulted in 10,564 pedestrian injuries in 2019. That’s an average of 29 pedestrian injuries every day.

In 2019, 61,369 suffered injuries in auto accidents in New York City. Therefore, pedestrian injuries accounted for 17% of all auto accident injuries in 2019.

Pedestrian injuries decreased from 2018 to 2019, and 2019 was the second-lowest year for pedestrian injuries when looking at the past five years.
