Although bicyclist deaths and accidents have increased in the last two decades, September’s spike is being blamed in part on the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. New Yorkers have needed to find alternative ways to travel the city since using public transportation systems would inherently put them at a higher risk of contracting the virus. Many people who had too far to travel to walk turned to riding bicycles.
The increase of bicyclists on the streets and sidewalks around NYC would naturally increase the chances of a bicycle accident occurring. Yet critics of de Blasio have argued that the increase is beyond expectations because he and the Department of Transportation have been too slow in implementing new bike paths and bike lanes around the city. In 2019, “The Green Wave” program began, which aimed to add 80 miles of new bike lanes across the boroughs before 2022. Yet the program is only about halfway done.
